If a vendor sends me a one-page solar module catalog with just a power rating and an efficiency number, I don't see a deal. I see a gap.
The $1,640 Mistake That Changed My Quote Checklist
In March 2023, I compared three quotes for a 128 kW module order. The lowest bid from a solar module OEM was $0.011 per watt below the next quote. On paper, that was a $1,408 saving. It looked responsible. It looked like I had done my job.
After we placed the deposit, the commercial invoice grew new lines: certification documentation, pallet labeling, and logistics coordination. Some of those are real costs. Any supplier is entitled to charge for them. But because the original quote did not list them, we had no chance to compare them with the other vendors' versions.

- Power tolerance and test conditions — not just '545W,' but how that number was measured and what range the factory accepts.
- Temperature coefficients and NOCT — otherwise string sizing in cold weather becomes guesswork.
- Certification references — IEC 61215, IEC 61730, or another recognized standard, with enough detail that I can verify the certificate.
- Mechanical load and warranty terms — not only the product warranty, but what the claim process looks like and who pays for shipping a bad module back.
- Packaging and palletization specs — because a damaged pallet is a problem that starts at the factory, not at the port.
Per FTC business guidance (ftc.gov), advertising claims need to be truthful and substantiated. I read that as a B2B reminder: the more claims a datasheet makes with no test report behind them, the more that datasheet is a marketing document. I do not accuse every thin catalog of being dishonest. I simply cannot calculate risk from a poster.
Solar Panel OEM vs. Private Label: Stop Arguing About the Wrong Difference
People often ask about solar panel OEM vs. private label as if one means 'original factory' and the other means 'imitation.' After enough orders, I stopped taking that bait. In practice, the terms overlap. Some private-label programs use the same production line as OEM orders. Some OEM orders are just standard modules with a different brand printed on the frame.
What matters is who owns the claims. If I put my private label on a module, I inherit the problem when the data sheet does not match the physical product. That is where transparency stops being a warm feeling and becomes a procurement requirement. A module OEM should be able to show which cells, which bill of materials, which tests, and which certificate applies to the product you are buying. If they cannot document it, do not let them put your name on it.
The private-label honesty test is useful: ask the solar module OEM which claims you will be allowed to repeat to your customer. If the answer is 'all of them' with no documentation behind it, that is not confidence. If the answer includes test reports, approved drawings, and a warranty flow, you have enough to make a decision.
'But the Transparent Quote Was Higher'
This is the objection I hear most, and it is fair. The fully itemized quote often has a higher first number, because it includes things the other vendor decided to mention later. Everyone is comparing apples to unripe apples.
I'm not saying every complete quote is fairly priced. I'm saying a complete quote is a starting point, while an incomplete quote is a gamble. The supplier that answers what's NOT included in thirty seconds saves my team days of work. That has real value.
If two module OEMs offer similar products and one of them is transparent about cost and specifications, the transparent one is not the more expensive option. It just has the courage to show the actual price before the relationship begins.
Here's my final position: I'd rather buy from a solar module OEM that sends a long, boring solar module catalog than from one that sends a single price and a promise. I want to see all terms before money moves, because after money moves, 'we'll clarify later' gets expensive.
