There Is No "Best Way" to Source Solar Components
Somewhere in every solar project's history—a cabin off-grid in Colorado, a warehouse rooftop in Texas—somebody had to answer the sourcing question. Buy branded components? Slap your logo on an existing design? Contract a factory to build exactly what you've specced? I've made all three calls in my six years of managing component purchasing, and the honest answer is that none of them is universally right.
For context, I'm the office administrator at a mid-size solar installation company. I manage roughly 60–80 orders a year, which works out to about $1.2M across 15 vendors. I report to both operations and finance, and I'm the person who finds the dead bodies when procurement goes sideways. So this isn't theory for me: it's the difference between a smooth quarter and a very long conversation with our VP.
Also, quick clarification that I've had to make more times than I'd like: the Morningstar that makes solar charge controllers and other off-grid equipment is not Morningstar, Inc., the investment research firm. Same name, two very different companies. I once had a vendor contact confused about why we were asking for MPPT controller specs when they thought we were asking about the Medalist iShares International ETF rating. The Three Models, Simplified
Here's how I think about the three sourcing models for solar components. The difference isn't branding, as much as it sounds like it is. The difference is who carries the compliance risk and the product responsibility.
- Off-the-shelf branded products. You buy established gear—a Morningstar solar charge controller, a recognized inverter brand, Tier 1 panels from a known solar module manufacturer—and install or resell it as is. The manufacturer owns the certifications, the warranty, and the liability.
- Private label. You work with a factory to take an existing design and put your brand on it. Minor cosmetic tweaks, but the engineering is already done and proven.
- Full OEM / custom manufacturing. Your engineers design it. The factory builds it. You own every layer of the product, right down to the compliance documentation that has to exist before the first unit ships.
Each one makes sense in different circumstances. The problem starts when companies pick based on ego or marketing optics instead of actual operational reality.
Scenario A: Buy Off-the-Shelf and Don't Overthink It
If you're a smaller installer—maybe 10 to 50 residential systems a year—this is where you should stay. Brands like Morningstar have already done the compliance groundwork. Their certificates are on file, their warranty process exists, their specs are public. I can place an order for 30 MPPT controllers and not lose a single hour of sleep about whether they'll pass inspection.
What I like about off-the-shelf is the predictability. Lead times are known. Pricing is public enough to quote against. Returns are straightforward. And when a customer's electrician asks "is this thing UL listed?", the answer is a one-page PDF, not a research project.
The downside is margins. You're not going to get rich reselling a Morningstar controller that the customer could price-check on their own. And your brand equity doesn't build when the equipment label says somebody else's name.
But for plenty of companies, that trade is acceptable. Not every installer needs to be in the manufacturing business. In fact, most shouldn't be.
Scenario B: Private Label Is the Underrated Middle Path
Everything I'd read when I started this job said the same thing: if you want real margins, you go OEM and own the design. In practice, our experience with private label photovoltaic modules suggested otherwise. Private label got us maybe 80% of the margin benefit at 20% of the risk.
The principle is simple. You find a factory that makes a proven product, negotiate the right to put your branding on it, and buy under your own SKU. Minimum order quantities are lower than custom manufacturing. Lead times are shorter. And you still get to tell your customers "this is our panel" while pointing to a design with years of field data behind it.
A procurement lesson I learned the hard way in 2024: be explicit about what private label means in your contract. We were doing what I thought was a private label deal. I said "custom branding." The factory heard "fully custom design." Result: a six-week delay before production could even start, because they were "reworking" the design. We ended up air-freighting inventory to meet a project deadline, which burned the margin we were trying to protect. The words you use on a spec sheet matter.
Private label fits well if you have an established customer base and want your name on the product. It's especially useful when a commercial client asks for brand consistency across multiple sites—one of our utility customers specifically requested consistent panel branding, and private label handled it cleanly.
The catch is compliance. With private label, the underlying design is certified, but your branding has to appear on the certificate too. That's a step companies forget. If the certificate says "Acme Solar Model 400W" and your panels say "YourBrand Solar Model 400W," you have a documentation gap. I've seen this hang up entire project inspections.
Scenario C: Full OEM / Custom Photovoltaic Module Manufacturing
Full OEM is the big leagues. You spec the product—performance targets, enclosure design, quality thresholds—and the factory builds to your drawing. This is the model for photovoltaic module OEM deals where you need a genuinely custom product, or where your volume justifies the engineering investment from scratch.
Here's where I draw my own line. I'm not a solar engineer, so I can't speak to how you design a high-efficiency cell architecture or tune a charge controller's MPPT algorithm. What I can tell you from a purchasing perspective is that the weight of compliance shifts entirely onto you.
The March 2023 incident changed my thinking permanently. A batch of modules arrived with certification documents that, at a glance, looked fine. When our compliance person dug in, the model number on the certificate didn't match the serial numbers on the panels. The factory said "these certs cover all our modules." They didn't. We had to hold that inventory until we could get the certificates amended—two months and a $4,000 testing bill later, we finally had clean documentation. Now, the compliance file is the first thing I review before any new supplier's first shipment, not an afterthought.
If you're entering OEM, budget for compliance early. Schedule certification testing before the first sample run, not after. And build the documentation system before you need it—not when a client's engineering consultant demands it mid-project. I track all our certificates in a shared tracking spreadsheet with expiry alerts. It's not glamorous, but it's saved us more than once.
Who actually needs OEM? Companies moving serious volume—10,000+ modules a year, say—where even a slim per-unit margin improvement justifies the compliance overhead. Or companies with a genuinely different product approach, where off-the-shelf or private label simply can't deliver what you've designed. If neither of those describes you, you're probably paying a tax for the privilege of saying "we manufacture our own."
Honestly, I'm not sure why more mid-size companies jump straight to OEM. My best guess is the satisfaction of being a "manufacturer" shows up well in pitch decks. But watching companies get buried in certification work, I'd rather see them understand what they're signing up for before ordering that first custom production run.
Compliance Doesn't Care Which Model You Chose
Whichever scenario you're in, solar module compliance requirements are constant. The certificates may sit in different hands, but the accountability always lands on the party selling to the end customer. The chain of evidence has to be clean.
Here's what we verify on every order—no exceptions:
- Certificates (UL, IEC, or local equivalents) with a matching model number, without exception.
- Batch or serial number records linking back to the certified sample.
- Labels and markings that exactly match the certificate. One extra character in a model number creates a whole new compliance category.
- Country-of-origin documentation, especially when projects have domestic content requirements.
There's also a marketing compliance angle that buyers tend to forget. Environmental claims about solar products—"fully recyclable," "zero carbon"—get scrutinized. Per FTC guidelines (ftc.gov), environmental marketing claims need substantiation; the FTC Green Guides (16 CFR Part 260) specifically require a reasonable basis before you call something recyclable or degradable. It's your job to ask the manufacturer for the documentation that backs up those claims, before the marketing team puts them on a brochure.
How Do You Know Which Scenario You're In?
I'll be blunt here, because I've seen too many meetings where people nod at all three options and then go with whichever one sounds most impressive. Ask yourself three questions instead.
- What's your real volume? If you're ordering under 500 units of a given component per year, private label and OEM minimums will eat your margin. Stay off-the-shelf and focus on delivery speed and quality installation.
- Who's actually asking for your brand? If you can name a specific customer or project that requires your branding, that's a real driver. If the answer is "wouldn't our logo look great," that's vanity, and it's costing you margin.
- What are you changing? Cosmetic changes point to private label. Genuine technological changes—actual efficiency improvements, a different input voltage range, a new form factor—those justify OEM.
The question isn't "what's the best sourcing model?" The question is "what problem is your brand supposed to solve?" If the answer is better margins, private label will get you most of the way there, at a fraction of the risk. If it's "we've built something genuinely different," OEM is the only real path. And if you just need dependable hardware that passes inspection, the branded stuff off the shelf is doing exactly what it should.
A final thought. The most efficient procurement operation I've ever run wasn't about getting the lowest unit price. It was about matching the sourcing model to our actual scale and workflow. When we did that, administrative overhead dropped, compliance issues all but disappeared, and the frustration level dropped with it. The sooner you stop chasing the "ideal" model and commit to the one that fits you, the sooner your operation starts running like it should.
